Angel Smirk

Angel Smirk
(For my granddaughter Anna on her first birthday)

Today I saw an angel smirk.
Not quite a grin above her chin,
And ‘twas not grace upon her face.
My pain, her gain as love there lurked.

On beatific countenance,
Mirth contradicts what tears can’t fix.
I’m in her sway—she rules my day.
Her mood controlled by whim’s suspense.

I saw an angel smirk today.
My heart, her path. A chronograph
Of selfless love, a snow white dove.
A tiny stray, peaceful at play.

Granddaughter’s love, a song ere’ new
Each gasp, each peal, a glockenspiel
Of newfound joy. My tune, her toy.
Each note a clue, her spirit true.

Today I saw an angel smirk.
She owns my heart, her game, my start.
I am her guest, life’s treasure chest.
Her smile, a jewel, shines through the murk.

Today I saw an angel smirk,
And I submit, my heart is knit
With threads of gold, her smirk so bold.
Anna’s love is life’s best perk.
